Fire damages garage

A fire in a garage on Wellons Street damaged the garage and its contents, including a pickup truck, on Friday.

A fire in a garage on Wellons Street damaged the garage and its contents, including a pickup truck, on Friday.

A garage and a pickup truck parked inside it were damaged during a fire in the 400 block of Wellons Street in downtown Suffolk Friday evening.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 5:31 p.m. and arrived at 5:37 p.m. to find the one-story, three-car garage on fire, with flames showing from the outside, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink. The fire was declared under control at 5:47 p.m.

The fire was contained to the garage and its contents, Klink stated in a press release. There were no injuries.

Fire investigators determined that the blaze was caused by a battery charger connected to a motor scooter in the garage, Klink stated.

Battalion 1, Engines 1 and 2, Medic 1, EMS 1, Ladder 3 and Rescue 1 responded to the scene, along with Suffolk Police, who provided traffic control.
