Only one Suffolk girls’ basketball team on Saturday could earn a regional tournament berth and also advance to the Ironclad Conference tournament championship game, and that team turned out to be King’s Fork High School — in decisive fashion.

The No.-2 Lady Bulldogs ended the successful season of No. 3 Nansemond River High School via a 62-43 defeat in the conference tournament semifinals at King’s Fork.

“We just kind of went back to what we do well,” KF coach Maurice Fofana said of the win.

The last time King’s Fork took on the Lady Warriors on Feb. 6, it lost 72-67 in overtime.

The Lady Bulldogs play man-to-man pressure defense well, and they went back to it on Saturday against Nansemond River, with strong results.

Fofana said his team’s main focus, defensively, was to stop the penetration of the Lady Warriors’ guards, particularly freshman Briana Autrey.

Saturday’s game was King’s Fork’s first since Feb. 9 due to the recent inclement weather.

“I was kind of scared about that, because we hadn’t played,” Fofana said. “I think they played well.”

Sophomore Cydney Nichols provided 16 points, five assists and four steals, and senior Imani Lewis also had 16 points.

Fofana said sophomore Amesha Miller did not have a great scoring night, “but she did all the other things we needed to do.”

She ended up with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Junior Jazlyn Dunn was out with broken bones in two fingers, so junior Latonia Thomas started in her place, giving the Lady Bulldogs four players in double figures by scoring 10 points.

“She played well, she defended well,” Fofana said.

The Lady Bulldogs have qualified for regional competition in each of the six years that Fofana has been coach.

No. 2 King’s Fork (16-5) will take on No. 4 Heritage High School in the conference tournament championship game on Monday at 6 p.m. at King’s Fork.
