A family of five was displaced from their Matoaka Road home by a fire that damaged the structure on Sunday.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue responded to the blaze at 7:45 p.m., finding a single-story brick ranch with flames showing from the outside. The residents had evacuated the building after being alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink.

Firefighters determined the fire had originated in the laundry room and had spread into the attic of the attached garage, Klink stated in an email. They were able to stop the fire from spreading further and called it under control at 8:28 p.m.

There were no injuries, and the family is being assisted by other family members, Klink stated.

Battalion 1; Engines 1, 4 and 6; Medic 6; EMS 1; Ladder 6; Rescue 1; and Tanker 1 responded to the scene, along with Tanker 9 from the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department and Suffolk Police, who provided traffic control and security on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
