Pageant tickets going fast

This year’s Womanless Beauty Pageant has yet to fill out its roster of contestants, but tickets are going quickly.

“Ticket sales are going well,” said Becky Adams of the Nansemond River Pilot Club. “If you want to come, come now and get your tickets, because they are going fast.”

Those who already have bought tickets are also being warned that the venue has changed since they purchased them. The event’s original venue, Suffolk’s National Guard Armory, is now unavailable, as it is in the midst of renovations, Adams said this week.

The new location for the event is the Liberty Baptist Church Recreation Center, located at 116 Romans Road.

Adams also said the annual fundraising favorite, now in its 15th year, is still looking for a few more men who are willing to wear women’s clothing in front of other people — in other words, contestants.

“We hope it’s another fun and beneficial night,” Adams said. Proceeds from the event go toward the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.

Money comes from ticket sales, silent auction bids and money placed in contestants’ buckets to vote for the people’s choice award.

Set for March 21 at 6 p.m., the event will once again feature dinner by Carrabba’s before the men — err, women — start strutting their stuff.

The event regularly features about a dozen men modeling casual wear and evening wear, performing talents and answering interview questions.

But there’s also a serious element to the evening — a tribute to those who have lost their lives to cancer and still are fighting the disease.

Potential contestants and sponsors, as well as silent auction donors and those wishing to purchase tickets, should call Adams at 539-9988 or 641-8558. Tickets are $20 each and include dinner and the show.
