A home was destroyed by fire Thursday morning in the 7100 block of Elwood Road.

The blaze was reported at 10:18 a.m., and the first units arrived eight minutes later, according to a city press release. Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames showing from the rear of the residence upon their arrival. The single occupant had vacated the home prior to the arrival of firefighters.

The home was a total loss, and the resident is being assisted by family members.

The Holland and Carrsville volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze along with Suffolk Fire and Rescue.

The fire was ruled accidental, according to the press release.
