A professional DJ is celebrating the opening of his second physical location, which provides enough space to store his growing cache of equipment.

Chris Rice has been a DJ for 14 years. In 2011, he made it his full-time job and has committed to giving his clients practically everything they need for their events, which can include weddings, birthday parties, corporate events and more.

“We needed some more space” besides the office in Smithfield, Rice said, because the amount of equipment keeps on growing.

In addition to his sound equipment, Rice now offers his clients specialty lighting, projection screens, photo booths with props, karaoke machines, a TV trailer and more. He offers tuxedo rental services and can do bundled contracts with The Catering Place, which is located in the same building at 2109 Holland Road. The business also has one full-time and three part-time employees who work with clients and staff events.

“It’s everything but the ring,” employee Matt Katherman said, referring to weddings. Rice quickly added, however, that Music Makes You Happy doesn’t provide the venue, the dress or matchmaking services.

Rice and his wife, Erin, live nearby, so Rice said he’s happy to have an office a little closer to home.

“My wife and I built our home and are raising our family here in Suffolk,” he said. “When we work with our clients, we pay attention to how important it is that we love what we do and that we are not an out-of-town company.”

Folks who stop by the Suffolk showroom can see how the photo booth and lighting will be set up at their event. It’s easier to show, rather than tell, Rice noted.

Rice held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday with plenty of friends and fellow wedding vendors in attendance. Vice Mayor Leroy Bennett and Councilmen Mike Duman and Tim Johnson also were there.
