‘Beer, bands and BBQ’ is back

It’s a simple formula that keeps them coming back again and again to an annual C.E.&H. Ruritan fundraiser, returning this Saturday for the 15th installment.

Beer, Bands and BBQ will take place at the Ruritan hall, 8881 Eclipse Drive, from 3 to 7 p.m.

“I think it’s really a great value,” said Jason Gould, an event co-chairman. “For $25 (in advance), you get to see three great bands, you can get a belly full of awesome barbecue, and we also have ice-cold beer.”

This year’s musical lineup has Brandon Peter and some musician friends playing an acoustic set for the first hour, according to Gould.

Following them, in the second hour, will be the Billy Joe Trio, which Gould said he found through a friend.

Up last — effectively headlining the event — will be the Sam Floyd Band. “They’ve been around for a while,” Gould said. “I first saw them at Driver Days. They’ve made a name for themselves in the area.”

Gould said he and a member of that band attended John Yeates High School together. In fact, Jason Gould said, to some extent the event serves as “kind of a big reunion” for students of the former North Suffolk high school.

But it’s also an event where folks from many other previous realities reconnect.

“You have a good time with all your friends and get to see people you haven’t seen for in a while,” Gould said.

The event is probably the Ruritan club’s biggest annual fundraiser, Gould said, and proceeds help light up the skies above Eclipse with fireworks every Fourth of July and fund $1,000 scholarships for two local high school graduates — this year, Mike Mullens Jr. and Andrew Phelps.

“We’ve been doing that for as long as I’ve been a member — eight or nine years,” Gould said of the scholarships.

He added, “We give some money to needy families at Christmas. That is the good part of being a Ruritan — we give back.”

Gould said the club about six months ago embraced the power of social media and set up a Facebook page, something members had been talking about doing for a while.

Advance tickets for Saturday’s party in Eclipse are available at Rio Grande Traders, 3049 Kings Highway; Bubba & Franks (the event’s slaw supplier), 15149 Carrollton Blvd.; and O’doodleDoo’s Donuts, 1601 Bridge Road.

Tickets are $30 at the door Saturday, and entry for children 12 and under is free.
