Betty Anne Harrell Kyle

Betty Anne Harrell Kyle passed away on June 15, 2015, at Lake Prince Woods in Suffolk. She was 87 years old.

Betty Anne was born and raised in Suffolk. After decades in Memphis, Tenn., Greenville, S.C., and Lubbock, Texas, she moved back to Suffolk in 1992 and was a resident of Lake Prince Woods in Suffolk for 12 years. She was the daughter of Robert Riddick Harrell Jr. and Virgie Adelina (Eley) Harrell, both long-time residents of Suffolk. Betty Anne earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Mary Baldwin College.

Betty Anne married Albert Sidney “Bert” Kyle III in 1950. They moved to Memphis, Tenn. in the early 1950s and lived there until 1963, where Betty Anne was a member of the Junior League of Memphis and actively involved in Christian education at Calvary Episcopal Church.

Betty Anne’s husband’s career in the cotton business led her to Greenville, S.C., from 1963 to 1970, where she was president of the Girl Scouts of South Carolina and an active member of Christ Episcopal Church. They also lived in Lubbock, Texas, from 1970 to 1992, where she was an active member of St. Paul’s on the Plains Episcopal Church.

Betty Anne returned to Suffolk after her husband’s death in 1992. In Suffolk, she was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she served as senior warden, junior warden, and member of the Standing Committee of the Dioceses of Virginia. She was a member of the Suffolk Social Club, the Suffolk Book Club, and the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society. She was a strong supporter of the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts and the Girl Scouts of the USA.

Betty Anne was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed hosting dinner gatherings and beach weekends, and who was always ready for bridge or board games. She is remembered for her zest for life, leadership ability, and readiness to be of service to others. She loved spending time with her three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her two brothers, Robert Riddick “Bob” Harrell III, who is married to Pearl Harrell, and John Clifton Harrell, who is married to Mary Lawrence Harrell, both of Suffolk. She had two children. Her son, Albert S. “Pete” Kyle IV, his wife, Katherine Carson Kyle, and her daughter, Natalie Popovic, live in Washington, D.C. She was predeceased in 2008 by her daughter, Margaret Virginia Kyle, of Memphis, Tenn. Her grandson, Albert Sidney “Bert” Kyle V, is married to Janice (Muszynski) Kyle, and they live in Raleigh, N.C., with their daughter, Sophia Grace Kyle, age 5. Her granddaughter, Beverly Ann (Kyle) Hyde is married to John Charles Hyde III, and they live in Charlotte, N.C., with two their children John Charles “Charlie” Hyde IV, age 4, and Eleanor Virginia “Ellie” Hyde, age 2. Her grandson, Stuart Mead Kyle, is married to Krista Brooke (Johnson) Kyle, and they live in Stoughton, Mass., with their four children Alexis Abigail Kyle, age 6, Tyler Bryan Kyle, age 4, and twins Jacob Pete Kyle and Anna Bree Kyle, age 1.

A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Suffolk, on Friday, June 19, 2015, at 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at Lake Prince Woods at 2 p.m. Inurnment will be in Memphis, Tenn., at a later date.
