The newly reactivated and revitalized Alpha Beta Sigma Alumni Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., Portsmouth, hosted its first Scholarship Rhomania on June 7 at Tabernacle Christian Church’s Shepherd Center.

The sorority presented its first scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to Rhoer Meagan Whitfield, a graduate of Lakeland High School, as well as a check for $100 for the Line of Pride recognition. This event and single scholarship amount was determined and awarded to this outstanding young lady because of her devoted time, effort and energy to the sorority for 15 years of uninterrupted service to Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. Delta Beta Sigma Basileus, Soror Sylvania Preston, shared glowing remarks about Whitfield.

Turquoise Daughtry of LWA Dance Company entertained more than 170 guests with her creative ballet, followed by the voice of Aime Powell. Local entertainers, The Michael Carson Band, “N-Treque,” provided entertainment before, during and after the dinner. Alex Scott, a comedian, who has performed on Comedy Central and BET, as well as locally, also entertained the crowd.
