For the second year in a row, a bowling fundraiser memorializing a Suffolk native who died at age 19 will raise money for the Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk’s Night Stay Program.

The Nick Leverone Memorial Bowling Fundraiser will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 1 at the AMF Western Branch Lanes, 3101 Lynnhurst Blvd. in Chesapeake.

Leverone died in a vehicle accident in August 2013. He was a 2012 honors graduate from Nansemond River High School, where he played soccer. He was active in the youth group at Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church and was known for his love of the underdog.

“They want to keep his memory alive, because that was so important to him,” said Hayden Blythe, president of the Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk.

Last year’s fundraiser purchased a shower trailer for the Night Stay Program, which is hosted at churches throughout the city during the winter months to provide meals and a warm, safe place to sleep for people who are homeless. CAPS also works with the people who use the program to help them find long-term housing and financial stability.

The shower trailer allows those people to get a shower on the nights they use the program. This year’s fundraiser will provide winterization and maintenance for the shower trailer as well as general funding for CAPS, Blythe said.

Formed by a coalition of local churches, CAPS provides emergency assistance to individuals and families and has served more than 900 people since its founding in August of 2012.

Bowling at the Aug. 1 fundraiser is $300 per team or $50 per individual.

Those who can’t make it to the event can sponsor a team, Blythe said. This year, the coalition has its official nonprofit status, so team sponsorships or outright donations are tax-deductible. Bowling entry fees are not, however.
