Michelle Folsom, who currently teaches a chair yoga class at Lake Prince Woods, will be the instructor for the class, which started this week and will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m.

Folsom has been teaching chair yoga at Lake Prince for eight years, in addition to teaching yoga classes at the Suffolk YMCA and Oakland Christian Church. Folsom said that she began her interest in yoga 15 years ago, and began teaching after five years of study.

“I still do a lot of continuing education,” Folsom said. “I try to learn different styles so I can incorporate them into my classes.”

Her current chair yoga class at Lake Prince Woods has participants use chairs for balance and support while doing traditional yoga poses, so that older students and those with disabilities can participate fully.

“It allows them to do movements that wouldn’t be accessible otherwise,” Folsom said.

Folsom emphasized that the new floor yoga class will be made for all ages, regardless of ability or experience.

“We want to make certain that whoever arrives is finding their own path,” Folsom said.

Charles “Red” Williams, a resident of Lake Prince Woods, said that he is looking forward to starting floor yoga classes. Williams has been doing chair yoga with Folsom for more than three years, he said.

“I like the exercise and the relaxation,” Williams said. “It’s clearing your mind of thoughts that are a heavy weight. The next class will be something new. I’m looking forward to it.”

Monthly costs are $16 for one class per week (four classes), $32 for two classes per week (eight classes) or $5 for a single class. For more information, contact Denise Brown, the resident services director, at 923-5513.
