Crews extinguish brush, structure fire

Firefighters battle a brush fire in the woods near the Hampton Roads Sanitation District Wastewater Treatment Plant in North Suffolk on Tuesday afternoon. The blaze also consumed a vacant building in the wooded area near the James River.

Firefighters extinguished a brush and structure fire Tuesday afternoon near the Hampton Roads Sanitation District Nansemond Wastewater Treatment Plant in North Suffolk.

The fire was about one mile into the wooded area past the entrance gate of the facility, according to a city press release. A vacant structure and about one acre of woodlands burned. The area is about 75 to 100 feet from the James River.

The fire was reported at 2:54 p.m., and the first units were on scene at 3:08 p.m., according to the city press release. The fire was extinguished about 6 p.m.

The Chesapeake and Portsmouth fire departments, the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department and the Virginia Department of Forestry all helped with equipment and personnel.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
