Route 58 reopened after crash

Route 58 eastbound has reopened following an earlier crash in which a man is reported to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The accident happened at 6:12 a.m. about a half-mile west of the weigh scales, according to a city press release.

The accident involved a Mitsubishi two-door passenger vehicle. Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel had to extricate the male driver from the vehicle. He is believed to have serious, life-threatening injuries. Due to weather conditions, Nightingale was not available, so the man was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by ground ambulance.

Two lanes of traffic were closed for part of the morning and reopened about 8 a.m.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
