St. John’s featured an imposing middle hitter who was 6 feet, 3 inches tall and proved effective early on against the Lady Saints.

“She was probably the most powerful hitter that they have seen, so in the first set, we were a little bit weird in our defense and a little bit timid hitting against her, and then they worked through it,” NSA coach Robyn Ross said. “Once they started digging her and she wasn’t scoring as many points, then the whole momentum shifted.”

Lady Saints junior libero Logan Harrell is the one who started getting digs against her, and she finished with 27 digs for the match against St. John’s, to go with two aces.

NSA junior outside hitter Livi Bono ended up with 14 kills, three aces and 13 points on serve. Junior setter Nicole Wright recovered nicely from a rough first set and finished the match with 38 assists, eight aces and eight digs.

“The deciding factor, which will be the deciding factor for most of the matches that we play, was our serving,” Ross said on Saturday morning. “We had 21 aces last night, and our passing, our serve receive was really good last night and our defense. We had 67 digs, so those are the three things that are going to win matches for us.”
