It was a happy ride home from Williamsburg for the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy field hockey team after it defeated host Walsingham Academy 4-2 in overtime on Thursday.

“We were down the entire game and came back and won,” Lady Saints coach Ashley Skinner said. “It was a really awesome game.”

With the Lady Trojans up 2-1, junior Paige Christiansen was Ms. Clutch for NSA, tying up the game with 2.9 seconds left in regulation.

“That was on a short corner,” Skinner said. “We had drawn a foul, and we kept it inside (the circle),” and Christiansen was assisted by sophomore Morgan Morrell.

During the 7-on-7 overtime, which lasts 10 minutes, Lady Saints freshman Kirtley Arnold scored to give her team a 3-2 lead with 6:34 to go.

Then, helping seal the win, Arnold assisted a goal by Morrell with 22 seconds remaining.

Walsingham took a 1-0 lead about six minutes into the game. NSA’s initial response came with 10:33 remaining in the first half when freshman Lauren Meyers scored, assisted by Paige Christiansen.

The Lady Saints finished with 10 offensive penalty corners, seven in regulation and three in overtime. The Lady Trojans had six for the game.

NSA freshman Sarah Christiansen recorded four saves in goal.

Skinner said her players put their hearts into this game, wanting to play until the last minute and proceeding to play harder and harder as the game progressed.

“I couldn’t have asked for more effort and teamwork out of them today,” she said.
