The Suffolk Golf Course plans its fifth annual Toys for Tots golf tournament on Dec. 5 to support children in Suffolk who might otherwise go without on Christmas.

“It is wonderful to have the Suffolk Golf Course step up once again to support this year’s Toys for Tots toy drive,” said Margie Wiley, top elf for the Toys for Tots drive. “It really just shows the commitment that folks have to helping families in need.”

John Bonds, general manager of the golf course, said the golf course staff is charity-minded.

“Charity work is something we’ve been into for the last few years,” Bonds said, noting its pro-am tournament annually supports the Down Syndrome Association of Hampton Roads and the Special Olympics.

“It’s such a good cause with Toys for Tots, and we do anything we can to support that,” he said. “We got a lot of donations last year.”

The tournament starts at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. Lunch and prizes will be given out afterward.

Bonds said golfers can register through 3 p.m. Thursday. The cost is $50 per player, or $40 per player with a toy donation.

“I invite those of you with a handicap of 8 or better, 15 or better, even 25 or better (like myself) to come out and play a round for a good cause,” Wiley said.

Another way to support Toys for Tots is through a donation to the Suffolk News-Herald Cheer Fund, which buys toys to be distributed through Toys for Tots.

Donations to the Cheer Fund are printed in the Suffolk News-Herald and can be made in honor of or in memory of a loved one. The donor can be listed anonymously if he chooses. The donor can also have his photograph taken giving the check to be published in the newspaper.

Donations for the Cheer Fund are accepted year-round.

To give, write a check payable to the Cheer Fund and mail it to P.O. Box 1220, Suffolk, VA 23439, or stop by our office at 130 S. Saratoga St. Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
