A Newport News man is charged with assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, among other things, after an altercation with police in the Walmart parking lot Friday.

Police received a call from the North Suffolk Walmart about a “suspicious person staggering and looking into parked vehicles,” city spokeswoman Diana Klink said.

The officer arrived saw the man stumbling and having difficulty walking, Klink added.

The officer tried to arrest Andre Julian Holloway, 25, for public intoxication. “He became resistant and combative and struck the officer in the chest with his elbow,” Klink wrote.

He is charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of justice in addition to assault and public intoxication.
