The city of Suffolk and the Suffolk News-Herald have partnered for the second year to celebrate love of local small businesses.

During the week prior to and including Valentine’s Day, local folks are encouraged to visit local businesses and might even receive $100 if they participate in a social media contest.

“I think we’ve created a good partnership,” city Economic Development Director Kevin Hughes said. “It’s something that we’re really looking forward to.”

“We are happy to again be working with Suffolk’s Economic Development Department on another promotion specifically designed to help locally owned and operated businesses,” said Suffolk News-Herald Publisher John Carr. “Both the Economic Development Department and the Suffolk News-Herald believe these businesses are the lifeblood of our local economy and help define what makes Suffolk unique and special.”

Here’s how the contest works. Visit any independently owned business in Suffolk between Feb. 7 and midnight on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.

While you’re there, post a photo of yourself or your valentine on the Suffolk News-Herald’s Facebook page, facebook.com/SuffolkNewsHerald. Be sure to include the hashtag #iheartsuffolkbiz and the business’s name.

Each post will be entered into a drawing to win one of five $100 gift certificates. There is a limit of one entry per person, per business, but you can increase your chances of winning by visiting as many businesses as you like.

On Feb. 15, the Suffolk News-Herald will choose the winners.

Hughes said the contest is a great way for businesses to connect with their customers.

“It creates an opportunity and a pathway for our local businesses to really jump into social media,” he said.

“Please visit your favorites, and don’t forget to take that picture and post it on our Facebook page,” Carr said.
