Crews extinguish scrap metal fire

Suffolk firefighters extinguished a blaze in a scrap metal debris pile Thursday afternoon.

The Suffolk Recycling location in the 200 block of Suburban Drive was the site of the fire. Numerous 911 calls of heavy black smoke in the area were received at 3:24 p.m., and the first units arrived on scene at 3:31 p.m., according to a city press release.

The large debris pile consisted of scrap metal from crushing operations and produced an extensive amount of smoke, according to the release. No structures were involved, and there were no injuries. The road was closed briefly.

The fire was called under control at 4:14 p.m.
