The King’s Fork High School boys’ and girls’ swimming teams will have good representation in the pool at the Region 4A West championships on Saturday.

Each team produced an event winner as well as a variety of other highlights in the recent Conference 17 Championships at the Brittingham-Midtown Aquatics Center in Newport News.

Hanover High School is the only school in Conference 20 with a swim program, so it rotates competing in the Conference 17, 18 and 19 championships. This year, it competed in the Conference 17 event, and both its boys’ and girls’ teams won.

King’s Fork’s teams took third behind Great Bridge High School.

Jimmy Smith of the Bulldogs won the boys’ 50-yard freestyle, while Carlee Morse of the Lady Bulldogs won the girls’ 50-yard freestyle.

Swimmers placing in the top 10 of individual events qualified for regionals, while relay teams placing in the top eight of a relay event made the cut, as well.

Smith also finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with swimmers from Hanover taking first and second, and Morse also qualified for regional competition in the 100 free.

Alex Kaye finished second in the boys’ 100-yard butterfly with a regional-qualifying time of 57.78 seconds. He took third place in the 100-yard breaststroke. Only swimmers from Hanover defeated him.

The boys’ 200-yard medley relay team, featuring Isaac Parsons, Stephen Reeder, Kaye and Smith, finished second to Hanover as did the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay team, which includes Andrew Noggle, Kaye, Reeder and Smith.

Parsons also qualified for regionals in two individual events.

Sonora Curliss finished third in the girls’ 200-yard freestyle, with Hanover swimmers taking first and second. Additionally, she qualified for regionals in the 100-yard freestyle.

Arabella Short and Hannah Marston also qualified in two individual events.

Girls relay squads that qualified included the 200-yard medley and the 200-yard freestyle teams. Making up the medley team is Curliss, Marston, Short and Morse, and Madison Schultz, Curliss, Short and Morse make up the freestyle team.

King’s Fork High School’s swimmers were set to begin competition in the Region 4A West Championships on Friday, but inclement weather delayed the start until Saturday. The event will be held at SwimRVA in Richmond.
