A 2013 Nissan Altima was traveling in the southbound lanes when the driver crossed over the median and struck a 2011 Ford F-150 and a 1995 Lexus GS300 head-on as they traveled in the northbound lanes.

Matthews was the driver of the Lexus. The driver of the Nissan had to be extricated from the wreckage and then was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries, Anaya stated.

The driver of the Ford was not injured.

The crash is still under investigation, but alcohol was not deemed to be a factor, Anaya stated.
