Crews clear scene of landfill fire

UPDATE: Crews cleared the scene of the fire shortly after 1 p.m., and there is no further threat, according to an updated press release. The cause of the fire was determined to be spontaneous combustion.

Earlier: Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews are on the scene of a working refuse fire at the John C. Holland Enterprises Landfill.

The fire was reported at 7:59 a.m. at the private landfill in the 4800 block of Nansemond Parkway.

Upon arrival, crews determined the fire involved a six-story pile of trash material burning in an area of about 100 yards by 100 yards, a city press release stated. An excavator from the landfill is assisting firefighters.

The incident remained ongoing as of about 12:30 p.m.
