U.S. Troops reach World War I fields

(AP) - American troops, sweeping in a wide area threatening German lines of retreat into the Reich, have crossed the Marne and captured Meaux in the loop of the historic river 23 miles east of Paris.

The Germans were yielding the battleground of the First World War without a fight as the Americans swept on through Meaux unchecked. Sedan, a famous battlefield in 1870 and 1940, was 105 miles to the northeast.

Suffolk garden club entertains servicemen yesterday afternoon

One hundred and ten service men and three women of the Marine Corps women Reserve, from 32 states, Washington D.C. and Bermuda were entertained yesterday afternoon at the Woman's Club home on Bank Street by members of the Suffolk Garden Club.

Representing the Garden Club were Mrs. Frank L. Lummis, president and chairman; Mrs. M.A. Cross, co-chairman; Mrs. W.S. Cross, Mrs. T.A. Jordan, Miss Lizzie Morgan, Mrs. Walter G. Gobbel, Mrs. C.H. Murden, Mrs. Joe E. Holland, Mrs. Thomas H. Birdsong, and Miss Nannie Birdsong.

Mesdames Octavie Clark and Rose Branch have returned home after spending their vacation in Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Canada. On their return home they visited Miss Blanche Hill in Washington D.C.

Miss Esther Eure, of Trenton N.J., is the guest of her sisters, Mesdames Octavie Clark and Idone Beal, and her brother, Melvin Eure.

Tom Thumb Wedding being planned

A Tom Thumb wedding is being planned by Mrs. Mary E. Estes to be presented at the Fist Baptist Church in the near future, and all parents whose children have been asked to take part are asked to have them at the church Tuesday evening between the hours of 3 and 4.

The Men's Bible Class

The Men's Community Union Bible Class will meet at the home of Brother A.C.S. Robinson, 19 Carolina Avenue, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. Lesson in 17th book of the Old Testament Bible. "What Human Seeketh: come for you are welcome.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry V. Stipe, of Damascus, Maryland, have returned to their home after a visit with Mrs. Stipes' mother, Mrs. George W. Oliver, of South Main Street.
