Pope seeks 'sincere peace negotiations'
Pope Paul VI did not mention any countries or belligerents in calling for "just and sincere negotiations to restore order and friendship" in his annual Christmas address Thursday night but he left no doubt he had Vietnam in mind.
The spiritual leaders of the world's half-billion Roman Catholics often does not use such specifics in his statements. It is felt by the Vatican that by using specific references sparingly, the pontiff can exert far greater impact on occasions when he feels a precise and blunt reference is needed.
Suffolkian gets training award
James Simmons of Suffolk, one of 39 neighborhood counselors who last night were graduated from a neighborhood training course conducted by the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project, was awarded a $25 U.S. Savings Bond as the outstanding member of his class.
Thief takes $60, loses $116
Approximately $60 was reported stolen Thursday night during an armed robbery at Oliver's Grocery at 400 Spruce St. but Suffolk Police later recovered $116 after the thief apparently stumbled a block from the store.
Acting Police Chief M.W. Bryant said today that Oliver's Grocery was robbed at 10:25 p.m. Thursday when a man of medium height and build walked into the store and put a gun in the face of the owner, J.W. Oliver and demanded money.
Suffolk woman serves C&P 41 years
Mrs. Daisy Lupton retired this week after 41 years with the Suffolk office of Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co.
The wife of Mr. W. Baker Lupton of 109 Katherine St., was the service representative for C&P. A reception was held at the C&P building on North Main Street Wednesday afternoon, attended by fellow workers, friends and family.
Thief steals grave wreath
The Meanest Person of the Year Award goes to the person who took a wreath off a grave in the Oakland Christian Church cemetery this week.
Mrs. John Doyle of Chuckatuck said today that she placed a wreath on her father's grave on Monday of this week. She discovered today that the wreath was gone.
"I hope whoever took it has a Merry Christmas," she said tearfully, "and that every time they look at it, they remember where it came from."
