Published Wednesday, July 24, 2002
Staff report
Police are searching for the gunman who repeatedly shot a man outside his house on North Sixth Street Tuesday night.
Darry Frederick Lassiter, 43, of 204 N. 6th St. suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the lower back and head, said Officer Michael E. Simpkins, spokesman for the Suffolk Police Department. He is in fair condition in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital this morning.
Lassiter's brother reported hearing shots fired outside the house around 10:45 p.m., Simpkins said. He looked out the window and saw the suspect fire several shots at his brother before fleeing on a bicycle.
The suspect was a black man wearing dark shorts and white T-shirt, Simpkins said. Authorities did not recover the gun.
Police do not have a suspect.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
Police are also searching for the man involved in an alleged carjacking in Pughsville late Tuesday.
The victim, whose name is not being released, told police that he was getting into his car in the 5600 block of Plummer Road shortly before midnight Tuesday when an armed man approached him and demanded the car keys, said Officer Michael E. Simpkins, spokesman for the Suffolk Police Department. The suspect drove off in the victim's 1998 Hyundai Elantra, a black four-door sedan, Simpkins said.
The victim was not hurt.
Police have not recovered the victim's car or the suspect's shotgun, Simpkins said.
