Jerry Lewis set to quit Hollywood

Jerry Lewis is joining the evacuation from Hollywood.

At least that's what the funnyman says. He plans to pull up stakes this fall and move his family to Connecticut. Why? Because he doesn't like the backbiting. The petty gossip off the movie town.

Jerry has had his share. His lengthy split up with Dean Martin caused much bitterness. Jerry and his wife Patti want to rear their family in an atmosphere away from the movie world with its constant yakkity-yak about pictures, picture people and nothing else.

Definite plans to build in Suffolk

Nestle Firm May Delay Construction of Plant

The Nestle Company, which has been making water and other tests on property in Nansemond County for more than a year, may not begin actual construction of a plant here for two years.

That was the word given representatives of the Suffolk-Nansemond Chamber of Commerce, who last week made a "courtesy" call on Nestle officials at the White Plains, N.Y. headquarters.

However, according to Dr. J.C. Sluder, Nestle chairman in charge of manufacturing, the company definitely plans to building in Suffolk.

"You can assure the people of Suffolk and Nansemond County of that," Dr. Sluder said, "but because of other critical demands it may be as much as 18 to 24 months before we begin construction.

Dr. Sluder said that during the past year "we have experienced some expansion demands in other areas that were not contemplated when we acquired the Suffolk site.

Suffolk Race

Commonwealth Atty. drive on last lap

Suffolk candidates are on their last lap this week. Tuesday July 9 is the finish line. There are only three in the race this year and the trio is running for the same position.

This race is for Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Suffolk. The three entries are: Edwin T. Coulbourn, Moody E. Stallings and Robert J. Parr.

In talking with voters and other 'experts' yesterday it's difficult to pick a favorite in this race. Most everyone interviewed or questioned, gave it as their opinion that the race is to be very, very close.

Suffolk taxicab riders pay more

Suffolk taxicab passengers today are paying an increased fare. The increase went into effect at 12:01 o'clock this morning.

The rate for one passenger is now 45 cents. This is a hike of 10 cents. Each additional passenger now pays 10 cents. Previously it was five cents.

Several taxicab drivers expressed the opinion that it is favorable to them if a flat rate of 50 cents to pay for one or five passengers. In other words no extra fare for additional fare for additional passengers.

The City Council, however at its last meeting saw fit to approve the rate which is now in effect.
