Win, loss ends SYAA Bronco All-Stars at 2-1

Published Sunday, June 30, 2002

The Suffolk Youth Athletic Association (SYAA) Bronco All-Stars saw their record for the SYAA Fourth of July Tournament end at 1-2 on Saturday. The Broncos opened the day with a 7-5 victory over Windsor at 8:30 a.m., but fell 3-2 to Greenbrier in the afternoon.

After two scoreless innings, the Chesapeake All-Stars got on the board in the top of the third. Patrick Willis singled and stole second, and Brant Sines smacked a singled up the middle to bring him in.

After SYAA went down in order, Greenbrier went right back to work. D.J. Harris singled to right field, and stole his way to third. Brock Reed and Matt Davenport flew out, but Chris Cartwright singled to centerfield, bringing Harris in. Cartwright moved to third on a single by David Clary, and scored Greenbrier's third run on a throwing error.

Sam Howell finally got a run for SYAA in the fourth. He reached on an error, stole second, and scored on a single by Nolan Robertson (only SYAA's second hit). But baserunning mistakes doomed Suffolk's chances in the fourth, as both Richardson and Curtis Poole were picked off in rundowns.

After SYAA hurler Codi Oliver sent Greenbrier down in order for the first time in the fifth, Jordan Hyatt reached first with one out. He stole second, and moved to third when Poole reached base on an error. A sacrifice grounder by Seth Potter brought Hyatt home and Poole to third, but Davenport struck out Mike Mason, and SYAA never threatened again.
