Carter upset by steel hikes
WASHINGTON (UPI) - The decision by America's three biggest steel companies to raise some prices by 6 percent provoked an immediate protest from President-elect Jimmy Carter, who said the increase would be an unsettling influence on price stability."
There was little response from President Ford or his lameduck administration but Carter warned oil-producing countries could use the price-hike to rates their own rates.
Committee moves to dump Wood
A special School Board committee Tuesday night made plans to recommend to their six colleagues that Robert A. Wood be replaced as Superintendent of Suffolk City Schools when his four-year contract expires in July 1977, the News-Herald has learned.
At least four of the five present made a strong attempt to remove Wood 10 months ago in February.
Art league support high
About 80 Suffolk citizens interested in forming a group dedicated to the development of the arts and cultural events in Suffolk gathered Tuesday evening in the Municipal Building's Circuit Court to form what will be known as the Suffolk Art League.
Taylor station in Germany
Private Henry Taylor, the son of Henry Taylor of Washington D.C. and Mrs. Phyllis Gerebe of Suffolk, is now stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army.
He was a student at John F. Kennedy High School and graduated basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.
He is the grandson of Mrs. Rebecca Beamon.
City man wounded in accident
A 22-year-old Suffolk man is in fair condition in Obici Memorial Hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the foot Monday.
Frederick Darden Jr., 1005 Custis Road, told police he was putting together a shotgun at his home around 11 a.m. Monday when the weapon discharged and pellets struck him on the side of his foot.
