Shelter featuring arts, crafts fair
Published Saturday, November 30, 2002
The Suffolk Shelter for the Homeless is hosting an Arts and Crafts Fair on Friday, Dec. 6 and Saturday, Dec. 7 in the shelter at 400 Finney Ave., across the street from the Division of Motor Vehicles.
Terry Miller, executive director, has invited artisans to display and to sell their work during the two-day fair.
"We see people with significant talents who only need a supportive forum to show their goods," Miller said. "This holiday season is a perfect time to host a fair. In these days of shrinking donations organizations such as ours need to be proactive in their fundraising efforts."
She also said that every visitor to the shelter during the fair helps them to meet their goal of helping some of the poorest citizens in western Tidewater.
"It also shows the community that there is a marvelous, clean, well-run and fun facility that exists for those who find themselves homeless," she said.
A variety of items will be for sale including photographic art, floral arrangements, gift baskets, clothing, holiday crafts, art glass, vintage jewelry, and furs.
"Yes, furs," said Miller. "I have quite a collection of vintage furs and I am willing to sell some of them to benefit the shelter.
"We are also very excited to have regional and Richmond artisans. In addition to my vintage collections in Terlyn's Oooos and Aaahs, we have invited Just Perfect Creations from Richmond and Barb's Hairlooms from Suffolk."
Miller said that even more exciting would be some fabulous handmade goods from employees of Sara Lee Coffee and Tea Consumer Brands. Holiday music will play throughout the shelter.
They will also offer lots of sweets, crunchies and munchies.
There will be something for everyone with prices ranging from $1 to $500.
The Arts and Crafts Fair hours will be as follows: from 3:30-7 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Santa Claus will arrive at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Admission to the fair is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages four-10, and free for children under four. Call 934-1353 for more information.
