IOW committee supports referendum
Published Wednesday, October 30, 2002
Editor, the News-Herald:
The purpose of this letter is to urge your readers to support the upcoming referendum that will raise the sales tax in our region by one (1) cent from (4.5 percent to 5.5 percent) to fund vital transportation initiatives. This single penny increase will raise $7.7 billion dollars and enable the completion of six (6) major projects that relieve existing traffic congestion and guarantee that our roadways can accommodate future transportation needs throughout Hampton Roads. All of the funds generated by this one (1) penny increase will remain in Hampton Roads. Our objective in supporting this agenda is to ensure that the region does not become gridlocked in traffic like our neighbors in Northern Virginia.
Isle of Wight County, the towns of Smithfield and Windsor, the Isle of Wight County School Board and the Chamber of Commerce have all voiced their support for this initiative. The individuals named below present the membership of a local steering committee, which has been working in support of this effort. We strongly urge every registered voter in our community to join us in voting YES for this important transportation referendum on Nov. 5.
Sincerely,
Isle of Wight Transportation Referendum Committee
