Local teachers go 'Swamp Stomping'
A group of roughly 40 Suffolk and Chesapeake teachers braved rain and mosquitoes to "swamp stomp" their way through Tidewater's largest outdoor classroom in a two-day Dismal Swamp Environmental Education program. Designed to introduce the Dismal Swamp's history and ecology, the class allowed teachers to see and touch samples of soil, water, vegetation and animals, wit the hopes that teachers would take this knowledge back to their classrooms for their students.
Driver gets extension award
A contract for the proposed $300,000 gymnasium and classroom addition to Driver Elementary School was awarded by the Suffolk school board. The board approved a contract giving Portsmouth company Robert Marquies Inc. the go-ahead to act as designer and general contractor for the extension. Driver, Southwestern and Booker T. Washington Elementary schools were planned to be converted to intermediate schools in the fall.
School board adopts new books
The Suffolk school board voted to adopt new, more expensive books in history, language arts and foreign languages, keeping with the state aw that such books should be updated every six years. Though the books were estimated to cost up to $35 apiece, the board, after a short discussion, agreed that it was time to bring their students the latest in educational materials
Wood brothers injured in truck mishap
Two Suffolk brothers were injured when a garbage truck in which they were passengers overturned in a ditch on Hosier Road. Robert and Fred Wood were passengers in a truck when its driver braked to avoid an oncoming car and skidded into the ditch. Robert was transferred to Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, while Fred was treated and released.
Spinks to fight South African
Former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks signed to fight undefeated South African Gerrie Coetzee in a 12-round bout on June 24, officials announced. It would be the first fight for Spinks since losing the heavyweight crown to three-time champion Muhammed Ali in a unanimous decision in September.
