The British general headquarters reports from India that an oil center at the head of the Persian Gulf has been seized and that British and Indian troops are making steady gains. Meantime, the Russians are pushing into Iran from the north and Moscow claims the Red Army has covered nearly 130 miles. The Russians met with no Iranian resistance.

There are persistent reports that peace negotiations are taking place in Tehran, Iran's capital, but still no confirmation. London headquarters believe Iran only wants to make a token resistance.

Southside playoffs get under way tonight as Goobers play Firemen

The Suffolk Goobers, having ended the season securely entrenched in the cellar, will meet Colonial Heights tonight as the Southside League Shaughnessy playoff gets under way.

Maury Wade will probably be on the mound tonight for the second-place Firemen. Guy Fletcher will probably get his turn tomorrow night at Peanut Park against the same opponents. The teams will play the best three out of five.

The Goobers ended the regular season schedule last night by succumbing to the league-leading Emporia Twins by a score of 3-1 in a game played in Emporia. It was not such a bad defeat, considering the fact that Sam DiSlasi, ordinarily a third baseman, was pitching for Suffolk.

Former Suffolk boy rides bicycle 240 miles to visit relatives and friends

Mark Benyunes, whose surname betrays his Spanish ancestry, surprised his aunt , Mrs. C.F. Turner, 124 1/2 Chestnut St., by riding up the other day on a bicycle - after a 240 miles trip from Greensboro, N.C.

But the part that amazed her most was that he made the long trip in 30 hours - and had taken his time along the way too, talking to farmers and seeing the sights.

Mark, 19, was born in Suffolk but moved away with his parents when he was very young. His mother is Mrs. Turner's sister and his father, M.J. Benyunes, used to direct a Sunday school class at First Baptist Church here.
