League building fire ruled accidental
Published Tuesday, August 26, 2003
Suffolk News-Herald
Suffolk Fire Marshal A.G. Barrett said arson was totally ruled out in Monday's fire at the Bennett's Creek Little League building in the 4200 block of Driver Lane.
Barrett said the cinderblock and wood-frame building was valued at $25,000 with $10,000 in contents.
The structure sustained $10,000 in damages, and the league lost $5,000 in contents.
There were no injuries in the fire since the building was empty and locked securely, said Investigator Dave Taylor. He said the fire started inside a wall cabinet; however, the cause could not be determined because of the fire's intensity.
Taylor said a call came from a cell phone reporting smoke coming from the concession stand. Firefighters arrived at 1: 25 p.m. The fire was burning in the rear of the building and spread to the up stairs.
According to the investigator, arson was completely ruled out since the building was securely locked and everything was exactly as it was left when the building was locked the previous evening.
