New American bomb very destructive

Cathey, Whitley are sworn in as new councilmen

L.H. Cathey and William F. Whitley, who officially take office as city councilmen Sept. 1, this morning took their oath of office and are therefore ready to assume their new duties.

Although their terms do not begin until Sept. 1, the incoming councilmen followed the usual custom here in taking the oath of office a few days ahead of time. Thus when council holds the first meeting, a called meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, the formalities will be over and the body can get down immediately to the business of electing a mayor and vice-mayor. All was quiet and informal this morning about the oath-taking. City Clerk Charles L. Hutchins administered the oath to Mr. Cathey around 9:30 a.m. Mr. Whitley came in around 10:45 a.m. and the city clerk administered the oath to him then.

Firm purchases King residence

Charles O. Lancaster, real estate broker, announced today that he has sold the residence at 509 West Washington Street, owned by Miss Zaidee B. Crump and built in 1910 by the late John King, to R.W. Baker & Company. The sale ranks as one of the major real estate transactions in the city this year.

After extensive repairs, the building will be used by the company as a funeral home, replacing the present one on North Saratoga Street, which has been used for about 18 years. Mr. Baker declined to elaborate this morning on his plans but said that they would be announced later. Work will probably begin Oct. 1.
