Published Friday, February 28, 2003

Special to the News-Herald/Provided by Wayne Spencer

From left, Allen Baggs, Walter Freeman, Ryan Smith, Sharon Paul, and Valerie Reid were promoted from white to yellow belt in the first promotion test of "Combat Hapkido," held Feb. 18 in the Suffolk YMCA . Combat Hapkido is a versatile discipline of self protection that includes an extensive variety of strikes, kicks, joint locks, pressure points, grappling, and disarming techniques. The result is a practical, comprehensive self defense system that is enjoyable to learn and that produces effective results in realistic situations. There are no forms or full contact sparring, as in the Tae Kwon Do classes. The program is taught by instructor Wayne Spencer of Spencer's Warrior Club at the YMCA from 8:40 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
