Powell receives Athena

Published Friday, February 28, 2003

The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce-Suffolk Division and Duke Automotive presented Jerry Powell as the 2002 "Athena Award" recipient during a banquet in her honor Thursday night at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.

The event celebrated Powell, the director of Medical Staff Services at Obici Hospital, for her dedicated services to others in the field of health care and, most particularly, as a role model for women in the community.

Dr. Beth Levin nominated Powell, and Lydia Duke of Duke Automotive, the sponsor of the Athena Award, presented the sculpture.

The Athena Award is presented and sponsored each year by Duke Automotive, and General Motors Corporation in Lansing, Mich. Duke is the only dealership in Virginia to sponsor the award that each year recognizes a woman who has shown leadership, community service and devotion to family.

Included in the list of previous Athena recipients are Joyce Trump, Sarah Leigh Walden, Fan Panton, Sunny Dixon, Lula Holland, Nancy Russell, Gail Pruden, Lorraine B. Skeeter, Ruby Walden, Jinks Babey, Pat Williams, Betsy Brothers, Dr. Margaret Reid, Peggy Wade, and Fran Alwood.
