Funeral rites today for Harvey Holland

Funeral Services for Harvey Milton Holland, president of the Farmers Bank of Nansemond from 1948 to 1958, will be conducted today at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church by the Rev. James H. Newsom Jr., rector, and the Rev. Robert B. Marr, pastor of Suffolk Christian Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Holland, who served he bank in many officers during his 54-year career, retired as president and trust officer in January 1959, but continued until his death as a director. He went to work for the bank June 6, 1904 as a messenger. In December 1916 he was named cashier. He became vice president in March 1941 and was president and trust officer in 1948.

He was the son of Charles Everett and Mrs. Susie Jones Holland of Nansemond County.

He and his wife, the former Nell Jordan, lived at 250 N. Main St.

Local Ruritans off for club convention

A large number of area Ruritans left here on Friday and Saturday to attend the three-day convention of Ruritan National in New Orleans.

Among those from the original Holland Club who will be at the New Orleans affair are J.D. Rawles, W.E. Beale, Harvey Worrell Sr. and W.W. Darden. The club's official delegation is composed of Lee F. Bond, Edward L. Felton and Herman E. Vick.

The Cypress Ruritan Club reports that it is sending three delegates, H.W. Rountree, W.C. Knight and Ryland Brinkley. In addition, two members, Ralph Hollowell Jr. and Paul Parker, were planning to attend.

Mills Luter, long-time Ruritan leader in this area, was also going as were a number of others from the Bethlehem Ruritan Club.

Planning career night

Pictured in the paper were students at Holland High School planning with their teacher and guidance counselor, Miss Patricia Nicholas, some of the details for the county-wide "Career Night," to be held at Holland High on Wednesday. With the teacher were Linda Carr, Ernest Whitfield and Pat Kuke.
