General Assembly

RICHMOND (AP) - Virginia's General Assembly today moved into its third full week ready to clear the decks of a bit of old business and take up a pressing tax problem.

The old business has to do with the revived doctrine of interposition, which holds that a state may challenge federal authority when it believes the authority has exceeded the bounds of the Constitution.

In this instance, the challenge relates to the Supreme Court's decision outlawing public school segregation.

Mary Virginia Pruden buried in county

Funeral services for Miss Mary Virginia Pruden, of Route 4, who died Thursday, were held yesterday afternoon at I.O. Hill Funeral Home.

The Rev. George Allen of the Suffolk Christian Church and Dr. H.S. Hardcastle of Oakland Christian Church officiated. Burial was in the family cemetery in Nansemond County.

Mickey Griggs honored on birthday

Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Griggs of West Washington Street entertained with a surprise birthday party in honor of their son, Mickey, who was celebrating his 9th birthday anniversary.

The table centerpiece was a decorated birthday cake topped with nine lighted candles.

Mrs. Griggs was assisted in serving by Miss Margaret Eure and Mrs. Morrison Piland.

Mrs. Vaden new Girl Scout head

The Virginia Tri-County Girl Scout Council last night named Mrs. Williams Valden president, to succeed Mrs. Herbert Darden Jr.

Mrs. Valden has been in the organization for the past seven years.

She has served as troop leader and secretary and vice president of the council.

Raider in first home tilt tonight

Suffolk High School's basketball team, which lost its 10th straight game no the season last night, against Wilson of Portsmouth, may break its long streak here tonight against Portsmouth when Franklin visits the local cracker box in a non-conference game.

At least, the Raiders should hold the role of favorite against the Bronco team that has been having troubles in its own Group 2 league.

Suffolk so far has only played in the Group 1 competition.
