Nansemond youngsters improve after crash
Two of three Nansemond youngsters who survived a head-on collision that killed six on the Bowers Hill overpass Sunday were reported as "somewhat improved" at Portsmouth's Maryview Hospital. A hospital spokesman said that Cathy Ann Daniels, 10, and Henry B. Panther, 5, are in fair condition. The condition of Cathy's older brother Mark remains poor. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Panther, and John E. Daniels, Jr., Mrs Panther's son from a previous marriage, were killed in the crash.
Rev. Whetzel to preach first sermon Sunday
The Rev. Kenneth E. Whetzel will preach his first sermon Sunday as the new pastor of the Main Street United Methodist Church. Rev. Whetzel is a graduate of VMI and received his master's degree of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary. He has held pastorates in Berryvile, Kernstown and Portsmouth and served as a U.S. Army Chaplain from 1961 to 1964.
Daughtrey becomes newest News-Herald staff member
Tazewell Daughtrey, a 23-year-old Suffolk native and doctoral candidate at the Princeton University Graduate School, is serving a five-week reportorial internship at the Suffolk News-Herald. Daughtrey will write local news and a weekly local column prior to his marriage to Marie Smoot on Aug. 5. The valedictorian of Suffolk High School's 1967 class, Daughtry hopes to teach after receiving his doctorate.
Watfold receives Howard University scholarships
Katrina Watfold, a recent graduate of Suffolk High School, was the recipient of a $2,600 Health Professional Scholarship from Howard University in Washington, D.C. for the coming year. She also received a $500 scholarship from the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigman Theta Sorority and $75 from the Fahocha Club. A three-year student at Norfolk State Uiversity, Watfold will attend the School of Pharmacy at Howard.
Carrol's stays undefeated in softball
Carrol's Drive stayed undefeated with a 9-8 win over Lakeside Shell in the City Parks and Recreation Slow Pitch Softball League, scoring three runs in the sixth to get to 4-0. In other action, Frank's Originals scored two runs in the sixth to edge out Geo Schmitt, and NRS Driver beat winless Holland Baptist 21-17. The next three games will be played at 6:45 tomorrow night.
