Joel Harrell dies unexpectedly
Joel Edward Harrell, president of Joel E. Harrell and Son, Inc. of Suffolk meat packing, died at 12:10 a.m. Saturday morning en route to Obici Hospital. He was a member of the board of directors of the National Independent Meat Packer's Association, and of the board of directors of the Virginia Meat Packer's Association. He was also a charter member of the Liberty Spring Ruritan Club and a past president of the Cypress Ruritan Club.
Eye operation gives woman new focus
Mrs. J.C. McCotter was able to read a newspaper for the first time after receiving the innovative cornea transplant operation, which allowed her to read headlines and prices and identify people that she only knew by voice beforehand. Her vision was not perfect and never would be, but McCotter was glad to just receive the gift of sight. "I'll be happy to retain the vision that I have for the moment," she said.
Suffolk bank will pay $90,778
Suffolk's First Federal Savings and Loan Association has announced payment of a record dividend to the savings account customers of $90,778, according to James A. Parker, the bank president. The payment is for the first six months of 1963. The bank's total assets are now estimated to reach as high as $5 million.
