What is this?
Fireworks parking fee stinks
Published Monday, June 30, 2003
Editor, the News-Herald:
Here we go again. Last year the city recreation department sold ten dollar tickets to see the fireworks at Sleepy Hole Park. After complaints from citizens, the city then tried to explain that the money collected was not really a charge to see the fireworks, but a donation to the United Way.
Let's get this straight, Parks and Recreation has a budget of well over a million dollars, and they are once again trying to charge us to see our fireworks. They are not going to charge us to see the fireworks; they are going to charge us $5 to park to see the free fireworks. The Parks and Recreation Department has $20,000 in the budget for TGIF and haven't had a TGIF Party that I've heard of. Let's use this money to eliminate this parking fee and to defray any other costs.
The citizens of Suffolk pay for the fireworks, pay the Parks and Recreation employees. We have paid for the airport improvements and will pay the city police to be on hand for security.
The citizens of Suffolk could truly celebrate our Independence Day by demanding that those who come up with this parking fee rescind this fee and invite all citizens to celebrate the 4th of July free.
