Joseph M. Byrd Jr.

Joseph Mallie Byrd Jr., 84, of 1118 Moonlight Rd., passed away on June 27, 2003.

He was born Dec. 2, 1918 in Nansemond County to Joseph Mallie Byrd, Sr. and Ethel Marie Savage Byrd. He is a veteran of World War II serving in the liberation of the Phillipines. He worked as a farmer most of his life in the Everett's Bridge Community and he was a member of Oakland Christian Church.

The widower of Louise Dail Byrd, he is survived by one daughter , Carolyn Faye Byrd of Suffolk; one son, Joseph Gary Byrd of Smithfield; three granddaughters, Tammi Arthur and Courtney Green of Smithfield, and Elly Askew of Gloucester, Va.; one grandson, Joseph Byrd of Smithfield; two great granddaughters, Samantha and Bethany Green and two great grandsons, Nicholas and Kendall Arthur, all of Smithfield; five sisters, Evelyn Hardy, Mary Hedgebeth, Jean Powell, Dot Powell, and Joyce Bracey, all of Suffolk ; and one brother, Robert Byrd of Suffolk.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at 11 a.m. in the Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery by Dr. David Chauncey. Friends may join the family today from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Harrell & Hill Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
