Flood waters rise in South
(UPI) - Heavy rains across much of the South Saturday sent new torrents of water streaming across the raging Mississippi River. More than 600 miles of the river was flooded, forcing hundreds of families to evacuate their homes and swamping nearly 6.3 million acres of farmland.
Families were evacuated from flood-threatened areas along the Mississippi in Illinois, Missouri and Louisiana, and hundreds more kept watch on the rising waters. The Missouri River also was on the rampage as it swept east toward the swollen Mississippi. Residents of the small island community of Kaskasia, Ill., left their homes, taking their livestock with them.
Pet food plant planned here
A pet food processing plant employing 20-30 people will be built soon in Suffolk. In announcing the plans, Scot Pet Foods Co. officials estimated the investment will total $200,000.
Chairman Jack W. Webb of the Suffolk-Nansemond Industrial Development Authority says the plant will be located on property formerly owned by the M.A. Cross estate at the intersection of Roanoke Avenue and Mt. Horab Avenue.
State educator takes state job
Mrs. Margaret B. Moss, elementary supervisor, Suffolk City Schools, has resigned her post to accept her position as assistant supervisor of elementary education with the state Department of Education, Richmond.
Mrs. Moss has served as elementary supervisor since 1966. Her employment in Suffolk City Schools began in 1951, during which time she has served as teacher and librarian at Booker T. Washington School.
Ward named manager of Home Federal
Douglas A. Ward has been named manager of the Suffolk office of Home General Savings and Loan Association, according to an announcement by John R. Sears Jr., president.
Ward has been with Home Federal since March 1972. A native of Suffolk, he graduated from Suffolk High School in 1967 and from Campbell College in Buies Creek, N.C.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Ward of Suffolk
Rawls shoots hole-in-one
J. Lewis Rawls of Suffolk shot a hole in one Wednesday at Sara Bay Country Club, Sarasota, Fla.
Rawls used a 5 1/2 wood on the 171-yard hole, a three par.
Rawls was part of a foursome composed of himself, his wife, Mrs. Mary Helen Rawls; and his hosts, Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Tate.
