Pressures increase for Watergate disclosures
WASHINGTON (UPI) - A harsh contempt sentence to Watergate conspirator G. Gordon Liddy for refusing to talk and a demand that White House aides resign if they keep silent brought new pressure today for full disclosure of facts in the political espionage case.
The message, particularly from the federal courthouse, was clear: that the price for silence will be high.
In quick succession Thursday, there were these developments in the case which surfaced in predawn hours June 17 when burglars and wiretappers were caught in the Washington Watergate complex headquarters of the Democratic National Committee.
Landfill closing poses problems
The burden of Nansemond dumping will fall on the Suffolk-Nansemond landfill June 1 when the Driver landfill closes. The additional land on the single site will halve the projected use period of the Suffolk-Nansemond landfill from four years until two, according to estimates by City Manager C.M. Moyer Jr.
Another site is under consideration but both Moyer and Nansemond City Manager George Cornell say complaints by residents near most proposed sites make it difficult to obtain zoning and formalize permits.
Extension agent named
Mrs. Faye Taylor has been named as an extension agent with the VPI Cooperative Extension Service here, replacing Mrs. Saritta Lentz, who resigned. Mrs. Taylor, who resides at 129 Ridgecrest Drive with her husband, Kenneth, was home economist with VEPCO for five years prior to the closing of the department recently.
N-SA coach, headmaster see UCLA
Ray Carson, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy basketball coach, was among the area coached who attended the semifinals and finals of the NCAA championship basketball tournament in St. Louis. Carson, a member of the High School Coaches Association, attended with Arthur Jones, headmaster of N-SA. They saw the two semifinal games Friday and also the championship game Saturday between UCLA and Memphis State.
Earl Chaptman 'outstanding' in men's league
Earl Chaptman of the champion Hobson Hilltoppers was voted the outstanding player in the Suffolk Men's Basketball League and was awarded a trophy Saturday by Alex Cobb, assistant director of Parks and Recreation.
The ex-Kennedy player made 351 points to lead the league in scoring with a 25.1 average on 153 goals and 45 foul shots.
Parries Carson (Cardinals) and Darnell Eley (Russell & Holmes) were in the running.
