Cramer confident of GOP conservative win
Virginia GOP Chairman Dr. Alfred Cramer said subtle differences between republican gubernatorial candidate Marshall Coleman and democratic candidate Chuck Robb will spell the difference between republicans winning the top state race this fall.
Cramer, speaking to the Suffolk Republican Woman's Club Thursday night, said Coleman will be seen as the more conservative candidate - and thus would be the more "electable" of the two candidates.
Cathey announces for treasurer post
Forrest Cathey has become the fourth person to announce candidacy for the city's treasurer seat. He is the first candidate not to affiliate himself with a political party.
Four persons have declared intentions to run for the seat of retiring Treasurer S.B. Hazelwood.
...The other three candidates, who are all seeking the Democratic party nominations, include Fred Wilkins, president and cashier at the Bank of Suffolk;
Ronald H. Williams, assistant vice president of Atlantic Permanent Savings & Loan; and Faye Goodloe, an elementary school teacher.
Suffolk man dies from collision
A 19-year-old Suffolk man died from massive head inures died from a three-vehicle collision on Route 58 bypass early Friday morning.
Jeffrey A. Bailey of 353 Benton Road was pronounced dead at Norfolk General Hospital at approximately 11:20 a.m. Friday, nearly 10 hours after the accident that injured two other people.
Joseph Christopher Daniel, of 607 James St., was listed in stable condition at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital on Saturday. L.B. Lawrence, the driver of the diesel vehicle, was treated and released after the accident.
Mrs. Susie Mayfield has 90th birthday
Mrs. Susie E. Mayfield was honored at a celebration for her 90th birthday on May 10 at the home of Mrs. Frances Nobles of Newport News.
Those attending were a niece, five great-nieces, five great-great-nephews, and
and other friends and family from Suffolk, Franklin and Portsmouth.
The table was set up with three birthday cakes lighted with candles.
Hoff -Campbell wins Div. II tourney
Hoff-Campbell, favored to win the Suffolk Department of Parks and Recreation Division II volleyball tournament, did just that Thursday night in the Birdsong Recreation Center.
Hoff-Campbell won two consecutive games in the best two of three finals against the Ski Bums to add to the Division II tournament to their regular season first place.
