Seeking FAME? Come to JFK on Friday

For the past eight weeks 19 acts have been practicing with Bille White (local artistic director). They have been preparing for this Friday evenings FAME (Future Artists, Musicians, and Entertainers) performance.

Suffolk Parks and Recreation's Assistant Director, Lakita Frazier initiated the department's F.A.M.E. program. It started four months ago at Birdsong Recreation Center. Over 40 acts auditioned for a chance at performing Friday night. The field was narrowed to the top 20 acts.

FAME committee chairperson Karen Ashby said, "The hardest part was selecting the acts we were going to keep. We wished we could have kept them all, but due to time constraints, we had to narrow it down."

After the acts were chosen, they spent the next eight weeks at JFK Middle School's auditorium polishing their acts.

"We didn't want this to be a 'talent contest.' All of our participants are winners," said Mark Furlo, recreation specialist.

The children received help on costuming, choreography, and stage presence.

The show consists of a variety of different acts. There are pop singers, gospel singers, tap dancers, hip hoppers, a step team, a pianist, and a poet. Everyone will be able to find something they can enjoy. The children have all worked very hard and are very excited about their performance.
