No ladies wanted in Alaska

WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States government wants two things understood which a lot of folks apparently have misunderstood:

1. It is not looking for ladies to go to Alaska.

2. It has no Virgin Island houses to rent to mainlanders for $5.50 a month.

The situation - and if you'd see the settlers, you'd realize there is one - developed in the wake of two bulletins from the Interior Department. The first explained there are 2-1/2 times as many white men as women in the nation's vast northern territory. The second explained three low-cost housing projects had been opened in the Virgin Islands with rents ranging from $3 to $6.40 a month.

Ink had hardly dried on the items before the reaction began.

"I am ready to leave for Alaska at once," wrote a New Jersey woman. "Please send fare and the route."

"We are three girls," read another letter. "How do you think a tea room would go?"

Mrs. Darden gives up

city position

Mrs. Mary English, member of the staff of the joint health department of Suffolk, Isle of Wight and Nansemond counties for more than eight years, retired today when her recent resignation as city public health nurse became effective.

Mrs. Darden's appointment as city nurse was filled by the transfer of Mrs. Nellie B. Taylor, formerly serving as Nansemond public health nurse, to the city post.

Cohoon new chair of Young Democrats of Second Va. district

The Suffolk-Nansemond Young Democratic Club made a clean sweep of district committee appointments and split the district offices with the Isle of Wight County and Southampton clubs in the district caucus and general convention of Young Democratic Clubs.

The clubs of the second congressional district elected Willis E. Cohoon of Suffolk as chairman of the district organization, succeeding John H. Powell, who served last year. A. Dunstan Johnson of Isle of Wight was elected vice chair with Russell Johnson of Southampton as secretary and Patrick Joyner of Suffolk, treasurer of the district.

Miss Blanchard becomes Cadet

A joint farewell and welcome service for two young members of the Suffolk Salvation Army post will feature services at the Army Citadel Sunday night.

Miss Janie Blanchard, long active in the local corps, will leave Monday afternoon for Atlanta where she will enroll in the Salvation Army's Training College.

Lt. Einar Mattson, son of Capt. And Mrs. Albert Mattson, commanders of the local post, will arrive from his station in Roanoke to begin working with his parents here.

Four Suffolk girls at R-MWC

Four Suffolk girls will arrive at Randolph Macon Woman's College this month.

Miss. Emily Cross and Miss Doris Swain will return as juniors. Miss Betty Butler will be a member of the sophomore class and Miss. Frances Stallings will enter as a freshman.
