New bell soothes telephone nerve

What is claimed to be the perfect telephone bell is incorporated in the 1938 English telephone, it is reported by C.M. Turner, traffic manager of the Associated British and Irish Airways, Rockefeller Center. It was chosen by a specifically engaged jury of musicians, after two years of tests with gongs and bell metals. It is described as having a pleasing silvery note of medium pitch but average volume, which can be heard well but will never make a nervous subscriber jump.

At the research department, where the tests were carried on, there are machines for subjecting suspected telephones to life tests. There are also machines that bang earpieces about to ensure that they are proof against the bad-tempered subscriber who flings them down if he hears the line is busy.

Three stores to be built at site of new theatre

With the concrete going into foundations this morning, the Pitt-Roth Theatre Corporation today obtained a construction permit for the first unit of their theatre building to be erected on their North Main Street property.

The permit granted by City Building Inspector James H. Bangley calls for the erection of three store buildings fronting North Main Street at an estimated cost of $10,000. Plans for the structure approved by the inspector call for a unit which provides for expansion into a theatre by using the center store quarters as a lobby leading into the auditorium.

Other recent construction authorized in the city limits includes a new filling station being erected at 106 Pinner Street by Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey at a cost of $7,000, the remodeling of the A.F. Morgan residence at 127 Wellons Street and the G.A. Piland residence at 109 Linden Street into duplex apartments. Each remodeling job is estimated to cost $800.

Miss Riddick entertains Sans Souci

A lovely party was given last night by Miss Ellen Riddick at her home in Saratoga Street, complimentary to the members of the Sans Souci Literary Club.

The home was attractively decorated with forsythia, jonquils and green candles in silver holders.

Miss Elizabeth Edwards presided over a short business session in the absence of the president, Mrs. R.P. Birdsong. Miss Harriet Council gave a splendid review of Emil Ludwig's book, "The Nile." At the conclusion of the program, she was presented with a gift on behalf of the club. In a contest, prizes were won by Miss Zaidee Crump and Mrs. H. Stuart Lewis.

Miss Riddick was assisted in serving by Miss Janie Pinner and Miss Bessie Applewhite.

Miss Barnes weds

At the residence of Dr. Thomas H. Barnes, near Elwood, on Thursday, Feb. 23, Miss Virtley Barnes, a near relative of the doctor, and Mrs. J.T. Smith, were united in marriage by the Rev. J.E. Jones. The occasion called together a pleasant company, and of course, that ever hospitable home was a guarantee for a good time by everybody.

The young lady had a large number of relatives and friends to wish her much happiness in her new relation. Soon after the marriage, the bridal party drove to the home of the groom, near Suffolk, to enjoy a reception.
