A northern Suffolk youth receives an Eagle Scout award at 10 a.m. Saturday in Oakland Christian Church in Chuckatuck.
Christopher Savedge, 14, has been a member of Boy Scout Troop 25, chartered to the Chuckatuck Ruritan Club, since first grade when he became a Tiger Cub. He has received 23 merit badges, served as a leader in his troop and completed a major community service project.
His service project was done for the Hampton Roads Radio Control Association, which has its airfield located at the city's Lone Star Lakes. The project included cleaning and organizing the club's storage shed; installing new shelving; building and mounting a food-preparation table; and construction of new double doors to the shed. The last part of project was the construction of two airplane maintenance platforms.
Chris' project, which took more than four months to complete, was somewhat hindered by Hurricane Isabel.
The son of Joe and Sheryl Savedge, Chris is an eighth-grade honor student at Portsmouth Christian School. He is a member of Smithfield Baptist Church, where he participants in several youth groups.
He has received two Presidential Physical Fitness awards and has been awarded the Certificate of "Outstanding Christian Leadership" from his school.
Savedge has played baseball player with the Bennett's Creek Little League since he was 5. He has swam for the Nansemond Swim Club for three years and has more recently taken up the hobby of flying remote control airplanes. He is interested in studying aeronautics in college.
He plans to remain active in his troop and participates in some of the Venture Scouting activities.
