Carter and Sadat to meet at Camp David
WASHINGTON (UPI) _Egypts's President Anwar Sadat and President Carter will seclude themselves at Camp David next week for a round of
"quiet diplomacy" on Middle East peace problems, U.S. officials announced Saturday. State Department and White House officials made plain the Saturday-Sunday meeting is intended to restore momentum to the disrupted Israeli-Egyptian peace negotiations.
"We are concerned that the opportunity not be allowed to slip away," said White House Press Secretary Jody Powell.
Mayor Hope will not seek seat on council
Mayor James F. Hope today said he would not seek another term on the Suffolk City Council.
"Personal and business circumstances developed which will prevent me from running," Hope said. He declined to discuss the subject further.
The statement came on the heels of a press release signed by Hope and claiming that he would be a candidate. Hope cancelled the release. In another political development. Robert J. Singley claimed he would seek the Holy Neck borough city council post.
The position is now held by Edward Felton, who has yet to announce whether he will seek another term.
High winds inflict extensive damage here
Bitter westerly winds gusting up to 80 miles per hour caused extensive damage to trees, farm buildings, power lines and stores throughout Suffolk early today.
The storm blew through Suffolk between 1 and 4 a.m. today, according to the National Weather Service officials at Norfolk International Airport.
The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel station reported gusts of 90 mile per hour while stations at Langley Air Force Base and downtown Portsmouth reported winds from 70 to 72 miles per hour.
A spokesman for the Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Service said that damage in Suffolk was "extensive, citing calls by property owners saying roofs were blown off in Holland, Reid's Ferry and Bennetts' Creek.
"I would say we have had between 10 and 15 claims already today," said Carey T. Copeland. "The damage is scattered all over the city."
Home Makers meet
The Cypress Extension Home Makers Club met Wednesday at the home of Mrs. F. R. Umphlette
Jr. with Mrs. Umphlette , new president, presiding.
She welcomed members and a visitor, Mrs. Thomas Holloman.
Mrs. Umphlette read "A Recipe and a Miracle."
Mrs. Gibson Hicks read the minutes of the last meeting, called roll and read several thank you notes.
The February meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Thomas Holloman. Mrs. Umphlette served refreshments to the nine members present.
Men's League list four 400-plus sets
Four 400-plus sets, headed by Jesse Byrum's 439 for the Moose, and a big 177 single game by Fashion Flair's Robert Kinsey Sr., featured by Suffolk Commercial Bowling League competition Tuesday.
Byrum, who at one time held the league record for high set, had one game of 169 this week and his 439 set helped the Moose win three points.
Kinsey, besides tossing that single game of 177, came up with a 422 set that contributed greatly to Fashion Flair's three-point win over Planters Peanut Center.
Already rolling 400-plus sets were Gary Kinsey of Fashion Flair, who tossed a 415, and John Angle of Planters, who posted a 404.
Rev. Powell called to Liberty
The Rev. T.A. Powell will assume his duties as pastor of Liberty Baptist Church Sunday at the morning worship service.
The Rev. Powell, a Windsor native, is a graduate of the University of Richmond. He attended Liberty Baptist College and graduated from Hyles-Anderson Seminary.
The new minister, his wife, and three children will be making their home at 377 Turlington Road. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Herman Powell of Windsor.
Liberty Baptist Church, which was organized during the past year, is presently meeting in the Nansemond Heating and Cooling Building.
Fifth candidate seeking to represent Chuckatuck
A 32-year-old farmer became the fifth candidate in a crowded race for the Chuckatuck borough city council seat. Edgar Ray Savage announced Friday that he would be a candidate for the post in the May 2 election. Other candidates are incumbant R. Leroy Howell, Allen C. Watson, Frank Daniels and Larry Mizelle.
